No words can describe one’s feelings for those that have perished, have suffered and are suffering since the outbreak of the coronavirus, and for the country that has lifted itself to a new level of humanity and efficiency in dealing with this catastrophe.

Having visited Wuhan myself, some years ago and albeit very briefly, it is unimaginable for me that such a horrific epidemic could trouble this river-endowed city. And I particularly admire and respect the stoic fortitude of its inhabitants, to whom I extend my sympathy. As well as to all those affected in all of China. Among them must surely be architect colleagues. To them my special thoughts. And for those no longer with us, may they rest in peace.

Together with my admiration for the resilience of the Chinese people, accepting the necessary restrictions with as much calm as could logically be expected, one needs to also admire the effectiveness of the response of the Chinese government and, through it, perceive a blessing. To have been able to muster so many resources in such a short time is truly remarkable, not least the erection, in such minimal time, of the new ad hoc Wuhan Hospital, a feat which highlights, in no uncertain manner, the immense technical capabilities of your country.

One can only wish that the virus will soon be contained, and that life will revert to normality.Normality strengthened by the togetherness of a country, a people and an international community that has stood by their side.

My thoughts are with you all, and particularly with the people affected.
